The Portuguese Carlos Queiroz was named the new coach of Qatar, a country that is trying to forget its disastrous participation in the recent World Cup that it organized, announced the federation of the small emirate.
Queiroz, who turns 70 on March 1, has already led teams in five World Cups: three with Iran (2014, 2018 and 2022), one with South Africa (2002) and another with his country (2010).
The Portuguese coach replaces the Spaniard Félix Sánchez, who did not continue after the termination of his contract after Qatar’s participation in the World Cup in which he hosted and where he was eliminated in the first phase, after losing all three games – against Ecuador, Holland and Senegal.
Queiroz gained fame as a coach working as an assistant to Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, which he left to coach Real Madrid.
In the team from the Spanish capital, the Portuguese was unable to complete the 2003-2004 season and returned to Old Trafford.
He has also coached Egypt, Colombia and the United Arab Emirates.
