Sports Minister Matytsin said that the IOC began to understand the importance of the participation of Russians in tournaments
Sports Minister Oleg Matytsin praised the actions of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on the return of Russian athletes to tournaments. His words are quoted by TASS.
Matytsin considered that the IOC began to understand the importance of the participation of Russians in international competitions. The minister drew attention to the fact that sport has always been a unifying force for athletes, and any form of discrimination is incompatible with the provisions of the Olympic movement. He stated that this was confirmed by the conclusions of the UN international experts.
On February 1, UN human rights experts welcomed the IOC’s desire to consider allowing athletes from Russia to compete. They felt that athletes should not be discriminated against on the basis of nationality.
On January 25, the IOC issued a statement on the need to consider the possibility of returning the Russians to international tournaments in a neutral status. It was clarified that only those athletes who did not support the conduct of a special operation in Ukraine and did not violate anti-doping rules will be able to get permission to perform.
