Estonia opposed the boycott of the 2024 Olympics if Russian athletes are admitted
The President of the Estonian Olympic Committee Urmas Sõyrumaa opposed the boycott of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris if Russians participate in them. His words are quoted by Inside the Games.
“Boycotts never led to anything,” the head of the organization said. At the same time, Syyrumaa called the situation absurd and stressed that it would be preferable that many of the Russians did not take part in the Games.
Earlier, on February 4, another European country refused to boycott the 2024 Olympics if the Russians were admitted. The National Olympic Committee of the Czech Republic said it was not going to punish local athletes.
On February 3, Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Pawel Yablonsky called for a boycott of the 2024 Olympics if Russians were admitted. According to the Polish side, 40 countries oppose the participation of Russians in tournaments.
On January 25, the IOC announced that it was considering the possibility of individual admission to competitions for Russian and Belarusian athletes. It was noted that athletes who did not support the conduct of a special operation in Ukraine and did not violate anti-doping rules will have a chance to get permission to compete in international tournaments.
The Olympic Games are to be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
