Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, 36, said in an interview with the website The Athletic this Friday that he wants to stay in the German national team after recovering from his serious right leg injury, which should still take several months.
“We are in contact with (Germany coach) Hansi Flick. Hansi certainly assumes that I will come back and I will do everything for that. I am sure that I am capable,” said the player of the Bayern Munchen.
After Germany’s elimination in the group stage of the 2022 World Cup, Neuer was seriously injured skiing in the Bavarian Alps on December 9th. He fractured his lower right leg.
The goalkeeper explained that he has been skiing “for over 30 years” and said he never thought his career was over.
“Since I found out I could have surgery, I was confident everything would go well,” he said.
Neuer was out of football for almost a season due to a broken left foot in 2017, but managed to recover in time to play in the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where the German team was also eliminated in the group stage.
Germany will host Euro 2024.
