Canada supported the study of the possibility of participation of Russians in tournaments in a neutral status
The head of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Canada, David Shoemaker, commented on the possible admission of Russian athletes to the 2024 Games. His words are quoted by TSN.
Shoemaker advocated studying the possibility of Russians participating in tournaments in a neutral status. At the same time, he noted that the NOC of Canada continues to support the recommendation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that athletes and officials from Russia and Belarus should not be invited to participate in international competitions. “But we recognize that the decision to exclude athletes solely because of their nationality also goes against the core principles of the Olympic Movement,” Shoemaker added.
On January 25, the IOC said that they were considering the possibility of individual admission to competitions for Russian and Belarusian athletes and their performance under a neutral flag. It was clarified that only athletes who did not support the conduct of a special operation in Ukraine and did not violate anti-doping rules would get a chance to take part in international tournaments. Poland and the Baltic states later called on the IOC to keep these athletes out of the 2024 Games, while Ukraine threatened to boycott the tournament.
The Olympic Games are to be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
