Argentinian Héctor Cúper is the new coach of the Syrian national team

Argentine Héctor Cúper was announced this Thursday by the Syrian Football Federation as the new coach of the country’s national team.

“Héctor Cúper, the new coach of the Syrian national team, and his assistants will arrive in Syria in the next few days,” said the federation, without giving details on the length of his contract.

Cúper, 67 years old, built most of his career as a club coach in Europe and, among others, managed Valencia (1999-2001), where he was runner-up in the Champions League in 2000 and 2001, Inter Milan (2001-2003 ) and Parma (2008).

In national team football, he managed Georgia (2008-2009), Egypt (2015-2018), Uzbekistan (2018-2019) and Democratic Republic of Congo (2021-2022). With the Egyptians, he was runner-up in the African Cup of Nations in 2017.

Currently ranked 90th by FIFA, Syria has never participated in a World Cup throughout its history.
