United’s Varane announces retirement from France national team

Defender Raphael Varane, formerly of Real Madrid and currently at Manchester United, announced his retirement from the French national team in a publication on social networks.

“Representing our great country for a decade was one of the greatest honors of my life. Every time I wore this special blue shirt, I felt immense pride, but I had been thinking about this decision for some months now. I dreamed of doing like our heroes and , 20 years later, I had one of the most beautiful experiences of my life, which made me very proud. We brought home the trophy. I will never forget it. I still feel every emotion I felt that day, July 15, 2018. It was one of the greatest and most memorable moments of my life”, said the defender.

Varane thanks coach Didier Deschamps and “each of the members of the board, coaching staff and teammates”.

“I will miss those moments, but it’s time for the new generation to take over. We have a group of talented young players who are ready to take charge, who deserve an opportunity.”

In all, there were 93 matches for the French national team, one World Cup title, one League of Nations title and one world runner-up. Despite being only 29 years old, Varane believes it is the “right time” to retire and “let the new generation” take over from him.

In addition to the defender, Benzema, Mandanda and Lloris also retired from the national team after the Qatar Cup. The Manchester United player also has four Champions League titles and three La Liga titles under his belt.
