The head of the US Olympic Committee, Sykes, supported the IOC’s desire to return the Russians to the tournaments
The head of the US Olympic Committee, Jean Sykes, supported the desire of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to return the Russians to international tournaments. His words are quoted by the Associated Press.
“We have listened to many athletes in the US and understand their desire to compete with all the best athletes in the world, but only if the game is safe and fair,” he said.
Sykes added that the IOC should continue to study a return process that would maintain existing sanctions and ensure that only clean, neutral athletes are allowed to compete.
On January 25, the IOC announced that it was considering the possibility of individual admission to competitions for Russian and Belarusian athletes. It was clarified that only athletes who did not support the conduct of a special operation in Ukraine and did not violate anti-doping rules will be able to get permission to compete in international tournaments.
After that, the head of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine, Vadim Gutzeit, said that the national team could boycott the 2024 Games if the teams of Russia and Belarus participate in them. Latvia and Poland also want to join the boycott.
