In the first two rounds of the German Cup, Bayern Munich easily dealt with lower ranked rivals. First, they defeated third-league Viktoria Köln 5-0, and then beat Augsburg 5-2. In the 1/8 finals his rival was FSV Mainz.
Bayern Munich confidently advanced in the German Cup. A successful debut for Joao Cancelo
Even before the start of the match, attention was drawn to who appeared in the starting line-up of Bayern. We are talking about Joao Cancelo, who joined the team just a few dozen hours earlier on loan from Manchester City.
The Portuguese defender showed after 17 minutes that he could be a great reinforcement for the Bavarians. Then he sent a cross into the penalty area, after which Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scored with a header. It’s his 13th goal this season, making him the team’s top scorer. His attitude makes the departure of Robert Lewandowski not so noticeable.
It took Bayern less than a quarter of an hour to extend their lead. In the 30th minute, Thomas Mueller played to Jamal Musiala, who was running into the penalty area, and he beat the goalkeeper with a strong, placed shot towards the far post. The 19-year-old midfielder once again showed that, despite his young age, he is one of the leaders of the team – this season he scored 13 goals in 26 matches (as many as Choupo-Moting) and made 10 assists.
The German champions basically settled the question of promotion before the break. In the 44th minute, Choupo-Moting won the fight for the ball, and after a while he passed it to Leroy Sane. The winger found himself in a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper and a clever shot led to 3-0.
