In Cancelo’s debut, Bayern thrash Mainz and advance to the quarterfinals of the German Cup

O Bayern Munchen thrashed Mainz this Wednesday afternoon, 4-0, and advanced to the quarterfinals of the German Cup. The match marked the first victory of the Bavarian team in 2023 and the debut of Portuguese defender João Cancelo, recently signed from Manchester City.

Julian Nagelsmann’s team accumulated, until then, four draws in four games played since the turn of the year. This time, the team had goals from Choupo-Moting, Musiala, Sané and Alphonso Davies to win the victory.

Bayern still do not know their opponent in the next round. The definition will only take place after all the confrontations, foreseen to be finished on the next February 8th. This season, the club will be looking for its 21st title in the competition.

Now, Bayern turn their attention to the German Championship. The team’s next commitment in the tournament is next Sunday, at 1:30 pm (Brasília time), against Wolfsburg. The team leads the national league with 37 points, one ahead of Uniom Berlin, in second place.

How were the goals?

Full-back João Cancelo needed just 17 minutes to be involved in a goal for the first time in a Bayern shirt. The Portuguese crossed at Choupo-Moting’s feet, inside the small area, which he only had the trouble to take away from the goalkeeper.

The second goal was scored at 30′ of the first half. The young Musiala received a pass at the entrance to the area, made a good individual move and put it in the back of the net. The third happened in the final minutes of the first stage: Sané was triggered inside the area and hit the left corner hard.

Canadian Alphonso Davies was responsible for scoring the fourth and closing Mainz’s coffin. The player rose higher than the defenders after a cross in the area and, with a header, completed the goal, at 38′ of the second half.
