The UN welcomed the desire of the IOC to consider the possibility of admitting Russian athletes
UN human rights experts have appealed to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) regarding the return of Russian athletes to world tournaments. It is reported by RIA Novosti.
They welcomed the desire of the organization to consider the possibility of admitting athletes from Russia. “We urge the IOC to take a decision in this direction and go further by ensuring that no athlete is discriminated against on the basis of their nationality,” the experts said in a statement.
The UN also called on the IOC to apply the same rules to all athletes, regardless of their nationality. They stressed that the condition regarding the support of the special operation in Ukraine “opens the door for pressure and interpretation.”
On January 25, the IOC issued a statement on the need to consider the possibility of returning Russians and Belarusians to international competitions in a neutral status. It was clarified that only those athletes who did not support the CBO in Ukraine and did not violate anti-doping rules will be able to get permission to compete in competitions.
