Biniam Girmay wins in Altea and is the first leader of the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana

The team’s Eritrean cyclist Intermarché-Circus-Wanty Biniam Girmay has won this wednesday first stage of the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana 2023, disputed between Orihuela and Altea, and, consequently, leads the test. The stage has been decided sprintand the Gipuzkoan cyclist from Movistar Alex Aranburu and the Murcian Antonio Jesus Sotoof Euskaltel-Euskadihave obtained, respectively, the fifth and sixth position. Fernando Barceló, from Caja Ruralhas been eighth.

Girmay won by attacking from a distance in the sprint, after gaining the best position, and entered ahead of Olav Kooij (Jumbo-Visma). Despite the fact that the initiative in the last few kilometers in the peloton has been taken by the Bahrain-Victorious of Mikel Landa and Pello Bilbao, the Eritrean has imposed his strength, despite the attempts of Movistar, which has placed three riders in the top five : Iván García Cortina, third, José Joaquín Rojas, fourth, and Alex Aranburu.

In the second stage, the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana will leave Novelda and reach Alto de Pinos after 178.2 kilometers, on a mountain day, with seven scoring ports.
