Liverpool announces key sporting director to leave club after 10 years

O Liverpool announced on Wednesday sporting director Michael Edwards will leave the club at the end of the season. The manager, who did not decide to renew his contract, was an important part in building the winning team of recent years.

With a link only until the end of the year, Edwards arrived at Liverpool in 2011 and from 2016 onwards he took on more responsibilities in football management for the Reds.

Considered a right-hand man of coach Jurgen Klopp, Edwards was important in the achievements of the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020. Players such as Alisson, Van Dijk, Salah, Mané and Roberto Firmino arrived at the club under his management.

For the role, Liverpool have announced that Julian Ward, currently assistant sporting director, will be promoted. “Being a part of this club during this period was a privilege because of the people I’ve been fortunate to work with and the success we’ve had. I’ve always planned to limit my time at the club to a maximum of 10 years. I think it’s good for the individual and, in the workplace, for the employer as well,” said Michael Edwards.
