Gretzky says Ovechkin is more important than chasing his NHL record
Four-time Stanley Cup winner, former Canadian hockey player Wayne Gretzky refused to consider the pursuit of his record as the main event in the career of the Russian forward “Washington Capitals” Alexander Ovechkin. His words are available on the NBC Sports Washington YouTube channel.
“Forget about the record. I’m so happy that they won the Stanley Cup because the most important thing in hockey is the title. The rest doesn’t matter if you don’t become a champion,” Gretzky said. He added that he was very happy to be next to an athlete who has a chance to break his record. “This will not change my life, but the National Hockey League (NHL) will benefit, and this is the main thing,” Gretzky said.
Ovechkin is second on the NHL’s top scorer list. On account of his 812 goals. Gretzky leading the list is 82 goals behind.
Ovechkin has been playing in the NHL since 2005. He spent all seasons in North America with Washington. Together with the club, the hockey player won the Stanley Cup in 2018.
