With the result, Rayo Vallecano rose to seventh place in La Liga with 29 points and is five points behind Atletico Madridin the fourth position, which opens the classification zone for the Champons League. Villarreal, on the other hand, loses the chance to touch the ‘colchoneros’ and parks in fifth place, with 31 points added.
Despite playing away from home, the team led by Andoni Iraola had the best chances of the match. Rayo Vallecano had a great opportunity to open the scoring at the end of the first half with Pathé Ciss. In the 25th minute of the second half, Sergio Camello scored for the visitors. The goal move started with a lateral kick in Rayo’s defense field. Midfielder Óscar Trejo had good vision to find a deep pass for Camello, who came face to face with the opposing goalkeeper and sent it into the corner.
Revealed at Atlético de Madrid, the 21-year-old striker scored his fifth goal of the season. Sergio Camello has played in 21 games, between La Liga and Copa del Rey, and started 17 of them, leaving renowned strikers Raúl De Tomás and Falcão García on the bench.
In the next round, Rayo Vallecano will receive Almería at home, on February 6, in Madrid, at Estádio de Vallecas. On the other hand, Villarreal are looking to recover against Elche, away from home, on February 4, at the Martínez Valero Stadium.
