Jeffinho’s departure to Lyon is a surprise even for Botafogo’s squad

O Botafogo won the Fluminense in the first classic Carioca Championship and the triumph shared attention with the departure of Jeffinho. Glorioso surprised by announcing the attacker’s loan to Lyonfrom France, a club that also belongs to John Textor.

The subject became a controversy among Botafogo fans, who felt harmed by the departure of Jeffinho, one of their main players. Striker Victor Sá revealed that the transfer was also a surprise for the squad, who only found out about the player’s departure through a WhatsApp group.

“Cuesta was in charge of the group yesterday, so everyone found out. We didn’t expect it, it took everyone by surprise. It was already said that he would be traveling. We didn’t meet him in person, but everyone wished him luck on Whatsapp. Our group he is united, gets along well and has a very positive energy”, he explained.

Botafogo and Olympique Lyonnais announce that they have conducted negotiations with the aim of reaching a loan with a purchase option for the athlete Jeffinho. The 23-year-old travels to Lyon on Monday (30) where he will undergo a medical.

Coach Luís Castro highlighted that he was not consulted on the matter. The Portuguese dodged the controversy and preferred not to comment on the case.

“I was not consulted about the situation and I don’t have to be. My job is to coach the team and the squad I have. I don’t have to take part in the decisions that the administration makes. Every coach wants to have the best players with him. Jeffinho is a good player and I want to have him with me. But there are things that I don’t control, so I have to accept it. The day I don’t accept it, I make a meeting with the administration and ask him to leave”, declared the team commander.

For Jeffinho’s loan, Botafogo will receive BRL 27 million from Lyon, a club that was bought by John Textor at the end of 2022.

This was not the first time that Botafogo players have been transferred to other clubs owned by John Textor. The American billionaire also owns RWD Molenbeek, a second division club in Belgium that was reinforced with seven alvinegro players.
