Six people have been arrested for hurling insults in a Rwandan league game against Salima Mukansanga, one of the referees who took part in the 2022 World Cup.
Mukansanga was insulted by Kiyovu Football Club ultras in the match against Gasogi United which ended in a 0-0 draw on 20 January.
Thierry Murangira, spokesman for the Rwanda Bureau of Investigation (RIB), told AFP that three women and three men were arrested last Thursday.
The six are investigated for having “uttered insults in public and for discrimination”, explained Murangira.
“The investigation continues and we will refer the case to the prosecution, but we continue to seek other people involved,” added the spokesperson.
The Rwandan Football Association has opened its own investigation into the incident, with the aim of publishing the names of the culprits.
Salima Mukansanga, 34, was one of three women included for the first time in the list of referees chosen by FIFA to officiate at a World Cup.
Last year, she became the first female referee at the African Cup of Nations (CAN), after having participated in the 2019 Women’s Football World Cup, held in France.
