Three-time world sambo champion Alexander Pushnitsa dies at the age of 73
Three-time world sambo champion Alexander Pushnitsa has died at the age of 73. This was announced in his Telegram channel by the mayor of Omsk Sergey Shelest.
“An unsurpassed champion in sambo, a wonderful, kind person, Alexander Mikhailovich Pushnitsa, has passed away. We all have yet to realize what a loss it is, ”said Shelest, expressing condolences to the relatives of the former athlete. According to TASS, Pushnitsa struggled with cancer for a long time.
Pushnitsa was the most titled Soviet sambist. He won gold medals three times at the World Championships (1974, 1979, 1983), twice at the European Championships (1976, 1984). The athlete also has nine victories in the championships of the USSR (1974-1980, 1983, 1984).
After the end of his sports career, Pushnitsa served as Deputy Chairman of the Sambo Federation of the Omsk Region. He is also an honorary citizen of Omsk and the Omsk region.
