The Spaniard Mikel Landa took advantage of the second day of rest of the Giro to heal the wounds of the falls suffered and, excited, keeps intact the dream he has had for years: to win the pink race, a possibility that he does not rule out. He also spoke of the Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz as one of “the favorites” to win in Italy.
“The Giro is a dream, I have been dreaming for several years of winning the jersey pink, but rivals stronger than me or various obstacles have always prevented it. This year could be the definitive one to achieve it. At the moment everything is going well”, said the cyclist from the Basque Country, at the press conference for the rest day on the Adriatic coast.
Despite the crashes that undermined Landa’s confidence, the man from Alava showed an optimistic profile, although he admits that there is still a long way to go in the Giro.
“Yes, the Giro can be won, there isn’t much time left and in the mountains I’m with the best. I have to maintain the level of yesterday at the Blockhaus, but you have to wait, be patient, it’s a race of attrition that can take its toll”, he commented.
Landa, sore from hitting the asphalt, hopes to recover the highest level in the second week of the race, theoretically with quieter stages.
“It gives me morale to be up there, there is always fear for the opponents, but yesterday (Sunday) we saw where each one is, and I was among the best. I’m quiet; If all goes well, I’ll be in the fight. I hope the fall does not affect me. I’m a little sore, but luckily it’s nothing serious, ”he explained.
‘There is more than Carapaz’
About the favorites jersey pink in Verona, Landa first pointed out the Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz, but on his list there are more dangerous rivals.
“Carapaz is one of the favourites, but there is more. Bardet was seen to have a good level, he is an experienced rider, he has been on the podium in the Tour, Almeida has shown that he is in good shape, he is a constant cyclist and he can be a candidate, as well as others like Hindley”.
Regarding the leadership of Juan Pedro López, Landa highlighted the progression of the Andalusian runner, holder of the jersey rose for six days.
“He is having a very good performance, in the Blockhaus he kept the jersey. He is a runner who has been taking steps, he is young and he can do great things”, he concluded. (D)
