The image of a soccer referee showing a particular card has gone around the world in recent days. It was Catarina Branco, who showed the first white card in Portuguese football.
In the match played between Benfica and women’s Sporting Lisbon, which ended 5-0, The Portuguese judge showed the card that the Portuguese Football Federation incorporated in previous months with the aim of recognizing fair play in football.
Those who received the card were the doctors of both teams who had helped a person who fainted in one of the technical areas.
Since 1970, two cards have been used in soccer to penalize players. According to Fifa rules these are yellow and red.
In the first case it serves as a reprimand and warning. It can be removed if you disapprove with actions or words, persistent infractions, delay the resumption of the game among others.
For red cards, on the other hand, the player will no longer continue playing the match nor will he be able to join it. Among the cases in which it is exhibited would be being guilty of serious foul play or violent conduct, receiving a second warning.
The annual general assembly of the IFAB, in 2017, allowed temporary exclusions during the match dispute, with this it seeks to “exercise a significant and immediate positive influence on the behavior of the offending player and, therefore, on his team”.
This can be incorporated into children’s and youth soccer, veterans soccer, people with disabilities, and soccer amateur, previous approval of the federation. (D).
