The European Olympic Committees will continue consultations on the admission of Russians to tournaments
The European Olympic Committees (EOC) expressed their position on the admission of Russian athletes to international tournaments. This was reported on the website of the organization.
“As for the future participation [россиян], the EOC is aware of the importance of removing barriers for sport as a unifying force,” said the members of the organization. They felt that athletes should not be banned from competing solely on the basis of their nationality. It is noted that the committees will continue consultations on the issue of allowing Russians to compete in the light of recent statements by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
On January 25, the IOC announced that it was considering the possibility of individual admission to competitions for Russian and Belarusian athletes. It is clarified that only athletes who did not support the CBO in Ukraine and did not violate anti-doping rules will be able to get permission to compete in international tournaments.
At the end of February 2022, many sports organizations banned the national teams of Russia and Belarus from participating in tournaments on the recommendation of the IOC. In some disciplines, such as motorsport, cycling, tennis, boxing, MMA and chess, the Russians continue to play in a neutral status.
