The Ecuadorian fighter reached the gold medal in the 53 kilograms category on November 5 after defeating the Russian Ekaterina Verbina in the final.

The Ecuadorian fighter Lucía Yépez, who triumphed in the U23 World Wrestling Championship which was played in Belgrade (Serbia), arrived in Ecuador on Monday and gave his sensations after having won gold in the 53 kilograms category.

“Excited that they are always looking out for me. Being a world champion is something I’ve always been looking for; I was always in fifth (place) or getting bronze, but now I did say to myself: This is for me, ”said Yépez, who in the previous phases defeated in the first round to the Canadian Taylor McPherson already moldovan Mariana Dragutan in the quarterfinals.

The fighter dedicated the medal to her family and those who have most supported her. “To my mother, my best friend, the technical part and my coach who is like a father to me.”

Yépez feels this medal as a revenge for what happened at the Tokyo Olympics. There he reached a diploma after finishing in eighth place of his category, in 50 kilograms, this after being out of the repechage for the bronze when suffering a fibrillar rupture.

“I kept the pike, it had to be for me. I came out aggressive (to the fight) and to take my gold medal ”, he indicated.

“We are proud of his participation, of this great victory,” exclaimed his father.

To obtain this unprecedented medal for the country, Yépez clearly beat Russian Ekaterina Verbina 4-0 in the end. The tricolor will be part of the Youth Pan American Games that will be played between November 25 and December 5 in Colombia. (D)
