The Belgian Thomas De Gendt (Lotto Soudal), who won the eighth stage of the Giro d’Italia, was reunited with victory in Naples a year and three months later on a day in which his experience was key to launching the final attack in the precise moment.

“A breakaway had been formed with a very large group with very good riders like Mathieu van der Poel or Biniam Girmay. Van der Poel attacked in the hardest part and it was very difficult to follow him but we managed to catch him. At that moment we tried to launch the counterattack because we knew that everyone would look at them and that’s how it was”, he explained about the attack they launched 42 kilometers from the finish line together with his compatriot and teammate Harm Vanhoucke (Lotto Soudal), the Italian Davide Gabburo ( Bardiani CSF) and the Spanish Jorge Arcas (Movistar) who was the good one and from whom the stage winner emerged.

De Gendt acknowledged that they have not been able to rest easy at any time during the break due to the level of their pursuers and even “we thought that they would catch us after the hardest part, but we have worked hard and managed to hold on”.

Regarding the resolution of the stage, he explained that his teammate Harm Vanhoucke has been a fundamental piece for him to be able to add his seventeenth victory as a professional, the fifth in a Grand Tour, since he has accumulated two stages in the Tour, two in the Giro and one in the Vuelta.

“Three kilometers later I told him to go flat out that I was sure to win and he did a great job until the final 200 meters when I launched the sprint”, he commented.

De Gendt (Sint-Niklaas, 1986) faces his twenty-second participation in a major event at this Giro, a type of event in which, despite having been third in the 2012 Giro, he decided to opt for fighting for partial stage wins that allow him to be one of the best when scoring the goal or putting the peloton through a lot of trouble.
