Minister of Sports of Belarus called discrimination against athletes a deliberate policy of the IBU

Belarusian Sports Minister Sergei Kovalchuk criticized the International Biathlon Union (IBU). His words are reported by Belarus Today.

He accused the IBU of double standards. Kovalchuk said that Belarus had been fighting for the right to host the World Cup stage in Raubichi for 20 years, but it was given to the Estonian Otepää. “Question: do you know at least one Estonian biathlete? What is this if not double standards? In addition, when much more northern Estonia was unable to host the European Championships in 2020, it was Belarus who lent her shoulder and saved the situation, and with it the tarnished reputation of the IBU,” he recalled.

“The current disqualifications and suspensions of Belarusian and Russian athletes are an old story,” he concluded. Kovalchuk called discrimination against athletes a deliberate policy.

On March 29, the IBU suspended the membership of the Russian Biathlon Union and the Belarusian Biathlon Federation. As noted in the international organization, the decision can be reviewed at the IBU Congress, which will be held in September.

On March 2, the IBU Executive Committee banned Russian and Belarusian athletes from participating in international competitions. Representatives of other sports faced similar sanctions.
