Ceferin said that the transition to the confederation of Asia will roll back Russian football 100 years ago
President of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Aleksander Ceferin commented on the possible transition of the Russian Football Union (RFU) to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). He is quoted by COPE with reference to the STA agency.
“I think that if this happens, Russian football will roll back 100 years,” he said. The head of UEFA stressed that this idea comes from some politician, and not from the RFU.
Earlier, the RFU assessed a possible transition from UEFA to AFC. “We see ourselves in the family of the International Football Federation (FIFA), in the part of UEFA. And we will watch how the situation develops,” said Maxim Mitrofanov, Deputy Secretary General of the RFU. He called the talk about a possible transition to the AFC fantasies and low assessed the likelihood of such a development of events.
On May 2, UEFA decided on the participation of Russian teams in tournaments in the 2022/2023 season. Russian football clubs were suspended from European competitions, and the national team was expelled from the League of Nations. UEFA also rejected Russia’s bid to host the 2028 and 2032 European Football Championships.
