Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia (17th WTA) was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, losing 2-6, 4-6 to Kazakhstan Jelena Rybakina (25th WTA). Despite the defeat, Ostapenko recorded the best result in the history of performances at the Australian Open – before losing to Rybakina, the tennis player from Latvia eliminated the Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska (101st WTA), Anna Bondar from Hungary (81st WTA), Kateryna Baindi from Ukraine (95th WTA) and American Coco Gauff (7th WTA).
Ostapenko almost hit the girl with the ball during the match. She apologized right away
Jelena Ostapenko started the meeting with Yelena Rybakina in the worst possible way, as she was broken in the opening game. Then the next three games were won by the serving players. In the fifth game, Ostapenko was broken again, and then she missed two break points and eventually lost the set 2:6. In the second set, Ostapenko was leading 2-0, but in the third game she lost her serve.
The fourth game of the second set was the longest of the match and probably turned out to be the key one. Yelena Rybakina turned out to be better in it, defending four break points and equalizing the score in the second set (2:2). During one of the exchanges, Jelena Ostapenko almost hit one of the girls passing the balls. The Latvian immediately apologized for the hit, and the fans and commentators responded with a loud “phew”. The situation looked quite dangerous. A ball hit with considerable force could injure a teenager. Fortunately, she only “scratched” her.
In the end, Rybakina won the set 6-4 and advanced to the semi-finals of the Australian Open. The slayer Iga Świątek will play for the final with Wiktoria Azarenka, who defeated Jessica Pegula 6:4, 6:1. In the second part of the ladder, we will have quarter-final matches, in which Magda Linette (45th WTA) will fight with Czech Karolina Pliskova (31st WTA), and Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka (5th WTA) with Croatian Donna Vekić (64th WTA).
