Marco Reus is one of the most loyal footballers of the 21st century. The 33-year-old German, although he left BVB as a youth player, returned to his home club in 2012, spending 10.5 seasons there, despite many offers from all over Europe. Now, however, the experienced attacking midfielder is not happy with his situation and intends to join RB Leipzig.
Difference of opinion
According to information provided by sport1.de, one of the main reasons for the decision allegedly already taken by the player is the lack of agreement on a new contract. Responsible for signing contracts in Borussia, Sebastian Kehl does not want to offer the player 12 million euros for the season, focusing primarily on rewarding him with bonuses. The experienced German did not like this idea, which meant that half a year before the expiry of the old contract, both parties are far from an agreement.
BVB’s talks with Youssoufa Moukoko, who extended his contract on Saturday, January 21, were also telling for Reus. The young striker was supposed to be a priority for the Dortmund club, among others. due to lower earnings, sales potential and the current level.
Back to an old friend
In the German media, we also read that for the first time in his career, Marco Reus asked his longtime collaborator Dirk Hebel to look for a suitable alternative for him. A colleague of the 33-year-old was last seen at the RB Leipzig stadium, where he sat in the VIP box next to the new boss of the red bull team, Max Eberl.
This is where history comes full circle. Eberl is a good friend of Reus from more than a decade ago when he played for Borussia Monchengladbach. It was the experienced activist who brought the then fledgling German to the Bundesliga club, pulling him out of RW Ahlen.
The case should be finalized in the coming weeks. Both Reus and RB Leipzig want a quick agreement that would allow for a calmer entry into the summer transfer window.
This season, the 33-year-old footballer has made 12 official appearances for Borussia Dortmund, scoring three goals and providing four assists. In total, the experienced midfielder was on the pitch for 44% of all minutes BVB played in official matches.
Borussia Dortmund is in sixth place in the table after 16 rounds. He has 28 points, seven less than leaders Bayern Munich.
