In the 1/8 finals, the 26-year-old athlete defeated the Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka. The meeting ended with the score 6:0, 6:0, 7:6(4). Thus, Khachanov first entered this stage of the Australian Open.
Earlier, the Russian tennis player criticized the fans after defeating American Francis Tiafoe in the third round of the Australian Open 2023. Khachanov did not like that the audience loudly celebrated his double faults.
Andrey Rublev will also represent Russia in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. His match against Dane Holger Vitus Rune will take place on 23 January.
The Russians play at tournaments of the Association of Tennis Professionals and the Women’s Tennis Association, including the Australian Open, in a neutral status. Athletes are deprived of the flag and anthem.
