Ngannou’s decision to leave the UFC became known on January 15. The athlete refused to renew the agreement, which was designed for two years and would make him the highest paid heavyweight in the history of the organization. He had previously complained about financial conditions at the promotion.

The heavyweight won the championship belt in a duel with American Stipe Miocic in March 2021. In January 2022, he defended his title for the first time, defeating the Frenchman Cyril Gan, after which he did not enter the octagon due to knee surgery.

Ngannou has been with the UFC since 2015. In total, during his career he won 17 victories and suffered three defeats.
