Ovechkin conducts a prank ritual before the Washington games to maintain team spirit
Teammates of Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin Garnet Hathaway and Sonny Milano spoke about the unusual ritual of the Russian before matches. Their words are quoted by Washington Hockey Now.
In the under-tribune room, before going out on the ice, the forward makes fun of other players, transforming their names and surnames into the names of dishes. “After the match we will all go to Cafe Milano for a glass of Marrrtini [отсылка к имени Мартина Фехервари — прим. «Ленты.ру»]and then we’ll eat… Milanese [отсылка к имени Сонни Милано — прим. «Ленты.ру»]’, says Ovechkin. After that, the players shake hands.
Hathaway notes that this supports the team spirit. “I just nod and smile. I don’t quite understand what he’s saying, but whatever it is, it works,” adds Milano.
Ovechkin is the second-best scorer in the National Hockey League (NHL). On account of the Russian 809 goals abandoned in his career. The leader of the ranking is Canadian Wayne Gretzky with 894 goals.
The Russian has been playing in the NHL since 2005. He spent all seasons in North America with Washington. Together with the club, the hockey player won the Stanley Cup in 2018.
