Peter Sagan won the first edition of the Critérium Giro d’Italia, disputed this Saturday in Dubai. It was the Slovak’s last race in the Bora-hansgrohe jersey, from 2022 he will run with the professional team TotalEnergies.

Sagan He beat Colombian Egan Bernal in the final sprint (Ineos Grenadiers), winner of the Corsa Rosa 2021. Third was the Swiss Marc Hirschi (UAE-Team Emirates).

The test, in short-race format, was played on an infinity-shaped circuit, the symbol of the infinite love of the Giro d’Italia. The batch of cyclists completed a tour of 30 laps of a 2.1 kilometer track.

For the last two kilometers of the display circuit the main guests appeared, all protagonists of the last Giro d’Italia and with their distinctive jerseys of the Italian round: Bernal as winner of the Corsa Rosa, Sagan as the bearer of the cyclamen jersey, Geoffrey Bouchard (AG2R) winner of the blue shirt and with them he was Hirschi, rider for the local WorldTour team.

On an almost definite script for these runners, Sagan and Bernal were left to define the sprint, with a comfortable advantage in favor of the Slovak. Behind, Hirschi won the sprint for third place and ahead of the rest of the group.

“It was a very special race. It’s amazing to be here and have the opportunity to race the Critérium Giro d’Italia, I am very happy to have won in this unique place, ”Sagan said.

The classification of the test also had winners by categories, with Elia Viviani (Cofidis, Solutions Crédits) as the best in the points classification, Attila Valter (Groupama-FDJ) as the most combative runner and Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) with the fastest lap.

The event was organized by RCS Sport, the company in charge of the Giro d’Italia, and with support from the Dubai Sports Council and the Dubai Expo 2020, “The first professional sports event held within a Universal Exhibition”, highlighted the organization. (D)
