Former IOC member Heiberg announced a possible boycott by the Europeans of the Olympic Games-2024 with the admission of Russians
Former member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Norwegian Gerhard Heiberg spoke about a possible boycott by European countries of the 2024 Olympic Games if Russians are admitted to them. His words are reported by Inside the Games.
Heiberg said that the West is expressing concern about the conditions for the inclusion of Russian athletes in the number of participants in the Olympics and are thinking about a possible skipping of the competition. “It is too early for the leaders of the Olympic Council of Asia to explore possible loopholes for Russia’s integration. The West should not take risks at the moment,” he added.
On December 9, the acting president of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), Randhir Singh, said that in Asia there is no longer a need to comply with protective measures in relation to Russian and Belarusian athletes. He offered assistance in the participation of athletes in OCA tournaments and stressed that the current sanctions would be observed.
At the end of February, many sports organizations banned the national teams of Russia and Belarus from participating in tournaments on the recommendation of the IOC. In some disciplines, such as motorsport, cycling, tennis and chess, the Russians continue to perform in a neutral status.
