Fernando Gaibor, a self-confessed Emelec fan, signs for Barcelona SC for one season

Fernando Gaibor has become a signing for Barcelona SC, Emelec’s archrival, precisely the club that trained the midfielder from Montalvo (Los Ríos province) and that took him to the peak of his career at a very young age.

Gaibor, 31, comes to the yellow team as a free agent, with a contract for the entire 2023 season, the bullfighting institution announced Thursday afternoon on its official site.

The soccer player will join the main squad led by Professor Fabián Bustos this Friday and will travel with the delegation to the United States for friendly matches in Daytona Beach, Miami and Dallas.

His presentation has been scheduled for this Friday at 11:00 a.m. in the press room of the Monumental Banco Pichincha stadium.

Gaibor, with six national titles (four won with Emelec) and one international title to his credit, made a place for himself in Barcelona SC’s transfer book after negotiations that apparently did not take long to close, since his agent, José Chamorro, has a close relationship with the canary entity.

Montalvo’s man was available in the January market once he announced in late December that coach Martín Anselmi decided not to take him into account for the 2023 season. He has been at Independiente del Valle since mid-2021, he was part of the team who won the LigaPro Serie A that year and also reached the 2022 Copa Sudamericana crown.

Raised in the quarry of the electricians from 2007 to 2010, Gaibor debuted with Emelec in the first division in the 2010 Ecuadorian Soccer Championship and progressively played, consolidating his presence in the calls to the Bombillo main squad. He achieved four national titles with the blue and lead shirt and was transferred during the presidency of Nassib Neme to Independiente de Avellaneda in January 2018.

He continued his progression in Argentine soccer, although the period was very short. In July 2019, he joined the Al-Wasl cast of the United Arab Emirates. In June 2020, when he completed his loan to Arab football, he had to appear again before the Diablos Rojos de Avellaneda and that’s when he started a dispute with the King of Cups.

Gaibor returned to Ecuadorian soccer in 2020 to play the last two months of the LigaPro Serie A championship in Guayaquil City.

His environment obtained a provisional authorization from FIFA while his contractual situation with Independiente de Argentina, the club that owns his sports rights until December 31, 2022, was clarified. However, according to his representative, Gaibor is currently a “free player” .

Emelec was interested in repatriating him in July 2020 and January 2021, but its leadership preferred to stay out of signing him due to the dispute that the footballer had with those of Avellaneda.

In July 2021, he signed for Independiente del Valle to continue his career and thus return to the fore, since he was no longer on the National Team’s radar. Gaibor did quite well at the collective level: he won the 2021 LigaPro Serie A, the 2022 Ecuador Cup and the 2022 Sudamericana.
