Messi for a record fifth time named the best playmaker of the year

Argentine striker Lionel Messi has been named Playmaker of the Year for a record fifth time.

The International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) has named Argentine striker Lionel Messi the best playmaker of 2022. This was reported on the website of the organization.

The striker received this award for the fifth time in his career, which is a record in world football. The previous achievement – four titles – belonged to the former Spanish midfielder Xavi. In total, Messi received 13 awards from the IFFHS, which is also the highest result in history. In second place in this indicator is the Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo.

On December 18, Messi, along with the Argentina national team, won the World Cup final in Qatar. In the decisive match, the forward converted a penalty kick in regular time, and also scored one goal in extra time and a goal in the penalty shootout.

Messi was named the best player of the tournament. In 2014, the striker also received the Golden Ball of the World Cup. Thus, he became the first footballer in history to win this award twice.
