Infantino says he took a selfie at Pele’s funeral at the request of the Brazilian’s teammates
International Football Federation (FIFA) President Gianni Infantino has spoken out about criticism for taking selfies at Pele’s funeral. He posted on Instagram (a social network banned in the Russian Federation; owned by the Meta corporation, which is recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation and banned).
“Pelé’s teammates asked to take a selfie of all of us together but didn’t know how. So I took the phone of one of them and took a picture of us all for him,” he said. The head of FIFA stressed that he was alarmed by the reaction of people, and added that he would not do anything disrespectful.
Earlier, Infantino called on countries to name one stadium in honor of Pele. “So that our children know how important it is,” he explained.
Pele died on December 29th. The cause of death of the 82-year-old Brazilian was the failure of internal organs against the background of progressive cancer.
Pele is a three-time world football champion. He played as part of Santos for 18 years and, together with the club, became the champion of Brazil six times. In 1999, the International Olympic Committee recognized the striker as the athlete of the century.
