Didier Deschamps’ contract at the helm of the French team was extended until 2026, the Les Bleus coach announced during the general assembly of the French Football Federation, this Saturday in Paris.

After joining the French team in 2012, Deschamps ended his contract after the World Cup in Qatar, where the blue they reached the final, won by Argentina.

“I want to announce something that is an immense pleasure for me, and that is that my president decided to extend me until 2026,” Deschamps declared in the gallery of the general assembly, where he was received with a standing ovation.
“I thank the president (Noël Le Graët, note) for his permanent support and his continued trust,” he added. “It is something that is essential in the functioning of the French team.”
Zidane is a profile that the Brazilian team likes a lot, says L’Équipe
Deschamps, who wanted to obtain an extension until the 2026 World Cup (in the United States, Canada and Mexico), thus won the bet when Noël Le Graët was more in favor of extending his contract until Euro 2024 in Germany.
“It is a very important sign of confidence to be able to have a contract until 2026,” the coach said this Saturday.
Deschamps, who won the 1998 World Cup as a player, has the longest lifespan on the bench of the blue ahead of Michel Hidalgo, who spent eight years and six months in charge (March 1976 – June 1984), also holding the record for games on the French bench (138, well ahead of Raymond Domenech’s 79) and, above all, the best track record.
Since Euro 2012
Appointed after Euro 2012, where the French team, with Laurent Blanc on the bench, was eliminated by Spain in the quarterfinals (2-0), Deschamps turned the team’s course around: his team reached the World Cup quarterfinals first -2014 in Brazil, where she was eliminated by future champions Germany (1-0), then led her team to the lost Euro 2016 final in France (1-0 defeat against Portugal) and to the world title in Russia , before reaching the final again in Qatar-2022.
His only failure took place at Euro 2020, played in 2021, where the blue they were eliminated in the round of 16 by Switzerland.
“If I continue it is because I am convinced that there are beautiful things to do and that I have all the energy to do it,” said the coach, who remembered the recent World Cup fondly, despite the defeat in the final.
“We only live happiness there (in the 2022 World Cup, note), despite a cruel outcome at the end. But from the moment where the desire and determination are at their maximum and my desire is shared by my president, this decision is reached that makes me very happy”, explained Deschamps.
The world runners-up will return to competition on March 24 at the Stade de France against the Netherlands, at the start of qualification for Euro 2024, the only trophy Deschamps has not won with Les Bleus. (D)
