The head of the Russian Football Union (RFU), Alexander Dyukov, said that the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) wants to see Russian teams in the organization. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
“Bridges are not burned, and we can consider some opportunities to restore relations. Within the framework of the working group, we will quickly agree, ”the functionary revealed the details. He added that if it is not possible to return to UEFA, the RFU will work on moving to another organization. Dyukov also confirmed that the Asian Confederation is ready to accept Russian teams.
Earlier it was reported that the executive committee of the RFU has created a working group that will study the issue of transition from UEFA to the Asian Confederation. The discussion needs to be completed by March 2023.
On December 23, it became known that UEFA opposed the desire of the RFU to leave the organization. At the same time, the International Football Federation (FIFA) will not prevent the Russian team from participating in the selection for the 2026 World Cup if the country moves to Asia.
On February 28, FIFA and UEFA excluded Russian teams and clubs from international tournaments. The teams do not play in European competitions, and the Russian team has lost the opportunity to compete for reaching the finals of the 2022 World Cup.
