Germany team leader: Black day. I failed

The recently completed 71st 4-Hills-Tournament was very unsuccessful for Stefan Horgacher’s players. The Austrian coach of the German ski jumping team argued before the prestigious competition that “he had never ridden with such a strong team”. After the whole tournament, in which his best player, Andreas Wellinger, finished 11th, he admitted that . Karl Geiger, the leader of the Germans, failed in particular.

Defeat at Bergisel

The 29-year-old from Oberstdorf started the tournament very well, finishing fourth in his hometown. In Garmish-Partenkirchen it was a bit worse, as he finished just outside the top ten, but it still allowed him to think about a good result in the general classification. His drama took place on the Bergisel ski jump in Innsbruck.

There, Geiger took 51st place in qualifying, which did not give him the right to start in the main competition. The German broke down to such an extent that on the day of the competition he did not appear on the hill, and watched his colleagues from the hotel room. The events of the first start on the Austrian hills also influenced his jumps in Bischofshofen. There the 29-year-old finished 23rd, which translated into exactly the same place in the general classification of the 4-Hills-Tournament.

Tranquility in the family circle

– If the beginning of me and Andreas (Wellinger – editorial note) could be perceived as a good base before the whole event, it was a dark day in Innsbruck. I failed qualifying and fell down in the general classification, Geiger confides in his column for “Skispringen.de”.

Immediately after the grueling struggle, he went home to spend time with his family and shut out the negative memories. – We are with our daughter in the bosom of nature and enjoy the peace and quiet. It did me good, and most of all, it allowed me to forget what was behind me and look ahead. I recharged the batteries – confessed the jumper. – Nobody sticks their head in the sand. We’ve all gone through crises and we know how to overcome them, added Geiger, who believes that better results will come in Zakopane.

The competitions in the Polish capital of the Tatra Mountains will take place this weekend, January 14-15.
