“Your tonsils often got infectedwhich inevitably affected his ability to train and compete,” the team reported.
When I was in the camp I had consulted with the team to have a tonsillectomy, because last year he had had many recurring infections and it was finally becoming a problem. Wherever I went and did whatever I did, I always had this problem. At the end of the day, it’s a nuisance,” said Carapaz, in statements collected by the official EF website.
With team approval, the surgery was performed in Ecuador, although Richard’s recovery took longer than initially expecteddepending on the squad.

“The surgery was a success, but he had a minor complication during recovery resulting in bleeding tonsils. He’s had two and a half weeks off the bike and now he’s back, training normally,” said EF physician Jon Greenwell.
After the operation, the Locomotive experienced swelling in the affected area“essentially restricting him from liquids and soft fruits for about ten days.”
Aim for the Tour de France
Two weeks passed before Carapaz receives the freedom of the team to return to trainingin a light way, at the beginning of this year.
“I was a bit uncomfortable on the bike. The first days I started with a couple of hoursbut this week I’ll start adding a little more. I think things are getting back where they belongthe body is adapting to the bicycle again and is returning to the routine”, pointed out the Olympic champion.
“This is a team with a lot of ambition and many things they want to achieve. I’m a piece that can fit into the team really well. I’m motivated and was looking for a team with the same objectives as me,” -Richard Carapaz pic.twitter.com/1sPVDvkWOe

This delay in starting their work with the team “It’s not a long-term setback for him, although we may need to adjust some of his spring targets”said Jonathan Vaughters, the team’s executive director.
With this “setback” will come a change in the planning of the first months of work and the calendar; Nevertheless, “his main goal, the Tour de France, is still on the way”Vaughters said.
For now, the Carapaz’s participation is confirmed for the national road championships which will be held between February 10 and 12, still to be confirmed, where the carchense will defend the title in the individual time trial won in 2022. (D)
