Welsh striker Gareth Bale announces retirement on social media

Welsh striker Gareth Bale announced his retirement from football at the age of 33 on Monday. The now former player released two notes: one more general and thanking all professionals, friends and family and another specific to the selection and the Welsh population.

“After much consideration, I announce my immediate retirement from international and club football. I feel very fortunate to have fulfilled my dream of playing the sport I love. It has given me some of the greatest moments of my life. The highest of highs of the last 17 seasons will be impossible to replicate, no matter what the next chapter has in store for me”, began Bale, who still thanks all the clubs he went through and the people involved in his career, whether professionals who worked with him or family and friends.

In his second note, exclusively to talk about the Wales national team, Bale addressed the people and wrote that retirement was the hardest decision of his career.

“How can I describe what being part of this country and this team means to me? How do I articulate the impact it has on my life? How do I put into words the way I felt every time I wore the Wales shirt? My answer is that I could never do it with words alone. But I know that everyone involved in Welsh football feels the magic and is impacted in such a powerful and unique way. So I know you feel what I feel, without use no words”, commented Bale, who also thanked for being part of the country’s history.

Gareth Bale was revealed by Southampton still in the youth categories in 2006. The star continued in English football wearing the shirt of Tottenham until 2013, when he went to Real Madrid and lived his peak in football. In 2020, he returned to Tottenham, but stayed there for less than a year, when he returned to play for the Spanish club. His last career club was Los Angeles FC, from the United States, which signed the striker in July 2022.

Altogether in his career, Bale played 554 games and scored 186 goals and 139 assists. Among the main titles on his resume, the striker won five Champions League cups, four Club World Cups, three La Liga titles, three European Super Cups, three Spanish Super Cups, a King’s Cup and an English League Cup.

For the Welsh national team, there were 111 games played and 40 goals scored. Among the main tournaments played, Bale was on the field in two Euro Cups (2016 and 2020) and in a World Cup (2022). At Euro 2016, he guided Wales to the semi-finals.
