The Argentine Gabriel Wainer announced the end of his contract with the Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) after two years commanding the Technical Secretariat, an area created along with the hiring for the national team of the technical director Gustavo Alfaro, who last November He stopped being the helmsman of the Tricolor once his relationship with the FEF ended, during the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

Wainer, who had been in the position since August 2020, thanked the managers, players, coaching staff, staff and FEF officials, and said that “it has been an honor to have contributed to La Tri for two years.”

Wainer was by Alfaro’s side during the Argentine technical director’s cycle at the head of the national team that achieved its fourth qualification for the World Cup in March 2022 on the penultimate day of the South American qualifying round, with a 3-1 defeat against Paraguay and a draw 1-1 with Argentina.
It was considered part of staff of 20 people who made up the technical staff of the Tricolor during the competition in the World Cup in Qatar.
The constitution of the Technical Secretariat in the FEF supposed the beginning of the consolidation of a correct process of national selections of the FEF from the formative categories. Said by Wainer himself -in an interview with EL UNIVERSO in October 2020-, he is responsible for “putting the teams in optimal conditions every time they go out onto the field of play and that absolutely nothing is missing when the coach start working.
Before being hired in Ecuador, Wainer worked in Argentina with Marcelo Bielsa; in Colombia, with José Pekerman, and in Paraguay with Gerardo Martino and Eduardo Berizzo.
In office, before the start of the South American World Cup, Wainer reported that he had made contacts with striker Felipe Caicedo and winger Cristian Ramírez with the aim of having both reconsider their decision to return to a call-up for the National Team. According to the now former technical secretary of the FEF, Caicedo and Ramírez maintained their position of not returning to the National Team.

Qatar 2022 was for Gabriel Wainer his sixth consecutive FIFA World Cup. In Korea-Japan 2002 he was an analyst of rivals, along with the assistant to the first coach, with Argentina; later he repeated with the Albiceleste in Germany 2006, already with José Pekerman in charge. In the 2010 South Africa World Cup he worked with Paraguay and in 2014 and 2018 he returned with Pekerman. The role of him only changed in in 2022 with Ecuador, where he has put aside analyzing players and rivals a bit to become technical secretary.
