The award for the best goalkeeper in the world of the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) has been awarded since 1987. The winner is decided by the votes of the IFFHS editorial staff and experts from various continents.
Last year, the Italian Gianluigi Donnaruumma triumphed, the second was the German Manuel Neuer, and the third Senegalese Edouard Mendy. Neuer was chosen as the best goalkeeper of 2020, Alisson won in 2019 and Thibaut Courtois in 2018.
And the Belgian triumphed for the second time in history this year as well. Courtois was ahead of Argentina’s Emiliano Martinez and Moroccan Yassine Bounou. “The fight between Courtois and Martinez was very fierce, as the Belgian with 125 points was ahead of the Argentine by only 15 points. Bounou with 55 points finished third,” reads the official website of the competition.
Szczesny is sixth in the world, Courtois is the best
Courtois is the eighth goalkeeper in history to win the award more than once. Like the Belgian, Peter Schmeichel triumphed twice in the plebiscite. Oliver Kahn, Jose Luis Chilavert and Walter Zenga have three wins each. Neuer, Iker Casillas and Gianluigi Buffon won five times.
In this year’s plebiscite, Wojciech Szczęsny took sixth place. Our representative scored 15 points in the voting. In addition to the players from the podium, the Pole was overtaken by the Croatian Dominik Livaković and the Frenchman Hugo Lloris. Behind Szczęsny were Jan Oblak, Alisson, Jordan Pickford and Mike Maignan.
