Hockey player Alexander Ovechkin says he has a long way to go in pursuit of Gretzky’s record
Russian Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin answered a question about chasing Wayne Gretzky’s record for goals in the National Hockey League (NHL). His words are reported by The Athletic.
Ovechkin said he has a long way to go to reach the Canadian. “Right now is the time to be with family and enjoy the moment,” he added.
On the night of December 24, the striker scored a double in a match against the Winnipeg Jets. Thus, he scored 801 and 802 goals for his career in the NHL and came in second place in the list of the best league scorers of all time, ahead of Canadian Gordie Howe (801 goals).
Ovechkin has the best goalscoring record of any European NHL player. Gretzky remains the leader in goals in the NHL, hitting the opponents’ goal 894 times and ending his career in 1999.
