Aitor Karanka has become the Maccabi Tel Aviv’s new coach, as reported by the Israeli club this Wednesday through a statement. Karanka, 49 years old, has been engaged for a season and a half to occupy the position vacated by Vladimir Ivic, whose departure by mutual agreement was announced this Tuesday after winning the round of 16 match of the Cup against Bnei Sakhnin (5-0) and is due to the signing of the Serbian by Krasnodar Russian.

The coach from Vitoria, who has opted to accept the offer from the Tel Aviv team because he considers that he has a serious project, was dismissed at the beginning of November at Granada, despite the fact that he had the team located in the upper half of the table of LaLiga SmartBank, with options to fight for promotion to the First Division.

Previously, the former Athletic player was coach of the lower categories of the Spanish team, assistant to Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid and managed Middlesbrough, Notingham and Birmingham City in England.

Karanka, who will debut on Saturday at home against MS Ashdod, assured that he is “excited and proud to be part of a club with so much history and tradition as Maccabi Tel Aviv is.” His team is currently second in the Israeli League, after sixteen games, six points behind Maccabi Haifa, which has been champion for the last two seasons. Eliminated in the last preliminary round of the Conference League, all eyes are focused on national competitions.
