Guardiola criticizes reinforcement of 50 million euros for returning with “excess weight” from the World Cup

After win against Liverpool last Thursday for the English League Cup, coach of manchester city Pep Guardiola was questioned about not using midfielder Kalvin Phillips and declared that the English player returned from world Cup with “overweight”.

“He’s not hurt. He arrived overweight from the World Cup and I don’t know why. He didn’t come back in conditions even to train, not even to play,” the Spanish coach told Sky Sports.

Kalvin Phillips was called up by coach Gareth Southgate for the World Cup in Qatar and played for just 40 minutes in the competition. The 27-year-old midfielder came off the bench against Wales in the group stage and against Senegal in the round of 16.

Highlight of Leeds in the 2020/2021 season under the command of Marcelo Bielsa, Phillips was signed by Manchester City in the last transfer window and cost around 50 million euros. However, after repeated injuries, the Englishman has only played four games for the Citizens since arriving.

“He cannot play. When he is ready, he will play because we need him so much. Am I upset? We had a private conversation,” said Guardiola.

Manchester City’s next commitment will be precisely against Phillips’ former club, for the English Premier League. This Wednesday, the vice-leader of the competition will visit 15th-placed Leeds United, starting at 5 pm (Brasília time), at the Elland Road stadium.
