Prosecutor requests six years in prison for MMA fighter Novoselov accused of rape

The prosecutor requested six years in prison for the Russian mixed martial arts fighter (MMA) Maxim Novoselov. This was reported to RIA Novosti by the athlete’s lawyer Dmitry Trubin.

“During the debate of the parties, the prosecutor asked to sentence my client to six years in a strict regime colony. The regime is conditioned by the fact that it has an outstanding criminal record,” Trubin said. He added that the defense asks to acquit Novoselov due to the absence of a crime event and any evidence, in addition to the testimony of the victim, which is refuted by examinations and other evidence.

In April, the Investigative Committee stated that a sufficient evidence base had been collected, which allows the athlete to be convicted of the crimes he was charged with. Against Novoselov, who had previously been convicted twice, cases were initiated under the articles “Violent acts of a sexual nature” and “Rape”.

The detention of Novoselov became known on March 27. According to the injured Sofya Chekmareva, the fighter and his friends offered to give her a ride, after which he raped her in the car.
