Eric Dier, England’s defender, was another World Cup-related figure asked about the rules adopted in Qatar. The player said that it is “disappointing” to travel to a country where he has “no power of choice” and vented about the situation.
The athlete was asked about the statements made by Gianni Infantino, president of Fifa, who defended the World Cup in Qatar. The stadiums built for the event were also part of the criticism and controversy.
“It is very difficult for the players. We come here and know that these topics will be addressed. I was looking around today about, I thought I would probably get these kinds of questions,” said Eric Dier.
“The World Cup was awarded to Qatar in 2010. I was 16 at the time. We are not involved in any decision at all about where to play. They are taken by people far above us and we are the ones who end up answering these types of questions. It’s disappointing. I carry the values I received from my family. At the same time, I respect wherever I go.”
Despite all the controversies commented on the World Cup in Qatar, the English defender highlighted the happiness of being participating in the edition, alongside the whole team.
“It’s a World Cup and I’m extremely proud to be part of the team. We are extremely proud to be here representing our country. We are football players, not politicians.”
The World Cup will have its official opening this Sunday. England’s debut will take place on November 21, at 10:00 am (Brasília time), against Iran, in Group B. The key still includes the United States and Wales.
