Nikolai Valuev, the Mountain Man boxer who was twice world heavyweight champion, confirmed that he has been called by Vladimir Putin’s Army to fight in the war in Ukraine: “Will I go? Of course”.

The media valued Valuev, who measures 2.13 meters and weighs 150 kilos, retired a decade ago (his last fight was in 2009 against David Haye in the baptized David vs. Goliath) to become a deputy in the Duma (they had to do a special chair for him to sit on) as a representative of Putin’s United Russia Party.

“In my opinion, all the deputies have received a recruitment summons; I also received a summons. I received the summons just before my trip to the Donbas region, and I was not at home. Next week I will go and report to the enlistment office,” Valuev told Izvestia.

Nikolai Valuev, who is 49 years old, retired from boxing in 2010, after a 16-year career due to “serious problems with his bones and joints.”

Despite his physical problems, Valuev is one of thousands of Russians being called up by Putin in a partial military mobilization to fight Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

It became world news outside of boxing when in 2011, as Enrique Mellado relates in the report ‘Nikolay Valuev, the giant with the soul of a poet who was humiliated by his appearance’, published in Brandwent in search of the abominable snowman, the enigmatic yeti.

Such a mission took place in Kemerovo, Siberian region. Hunters sighted the roughly 6-foot-tall, human-shaped furry creatures in 2009.

Valuev joined a search mission for the mysterious creatures: “I think miracles only happen at Christmas time. I doubt the yeti is going to hit the road to stop our van with open arms. But if I see something, I’ll report it.”

National Geographic made a documentary in which Valuev appears watching the video in which the supposed snowman appears. (D)
