‘I am very proud of what we have achieved’, says Max Verstappen, Formula 1 world champion | Other Sports | Sports

The Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull), recently proclaimed, upon winning the rainy, crazy and chaotic Japanese Grand Prix, double Formula One world champion, declared in Suzuka that “it is incredible” and that he is “very proud” of what that they have achieved, in a season in which no one doubts that their team will also win the Constructors’ World Championship; and in which he admitted that when he “crossed the finish line he did not know” if he had revalidated the title or not, because he did not know if they were going to award only half the points or more.

“It’s really crazy, I have mixed feelings after this victory,” explained Verstappen, 25, who won the race ahead of his teammate, the Mexican Sergio Pérez – triumphant a week ago in Singapore – and the Monegasque Charles Leclerc (Ferrari ), who had crossed the finish line second, but was penalized five seconds for recovering illegally -skipping the last ‘chicane’- the place that ‘Checo’ had taken from him.

“Looking back, it’s been an incredible year. I am very grateful to everyone in the team, who have worked hard, ”commented Verstappen after achieving his twelfth victory of the season on Sunday, the thirty-second since he has raced in F1.

“The sensational job that we have completed together with Honda and winning the championship with them twice is something really emotional, especially here,” said ‘Mad Max’ at Suzuka, the circuit owned by his team’s rider.

“I am very proud of what we have achieved and that we have also achieved it here”, commented the new sports idol from the Netherlands after revalidating the title with four tests remaining to conclude (the United States Grand Prix , Mexico, Brazil and Abu Dhabi), in a race after which he himself did not know, due to the confusion created derived from the different interpretations of the regulations.

Finally, the laps given behind the safety car were also counted, and in an outcome that confused even the most expert in the field of the category, all the points were awarded and not just a percentage of them.

“It is clear that it is a tremendous feeling, very crazy, since I did not expect to already be world champion when I crossed the finish line,” explained Verstappen after a day in which the aforementioned confusion further clouded a day that would have been simply joy and celebration, in which the Dutch star consummated a new sporting feat.

“I didn’t know if they were only going to give half the points; I was not clear how many points he had scored ”, Verstappen specified after revalidating, in a chaotic day, the Formula One world title. (D)
