The Polish Iga Swiatek, number one in the WTA, defeated the Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka on Thursday night and qualified for the first time in the final of the United States Open (US Open).

Swiatek, double champion of Roland Garros (2020 and 2022), beat Sabalenka, number six in the world, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 on the center court of Flushing Meadows, in New York.
First Pole in the US Open final, Swiatek will face this Saturday for the US Open title the Tunisian Ons Jabeur, the first North African, Arab and Tunisian woman to reach the final of the US Open and last Wimbledon finalist.

The number one, after a break in the bathroom, came back strong chaining eight points in a row and also breaking Sabalenka’s powerful serve three times, taking the match to the deciding set.
“I tried to use that time to figure out what had to change,” Swiatek explained of his hiatus. “I remember that when I was little what she did in those moments was cry, but now I can look for solutions, and I got it.”
The Pole, who added her eighth win in a row against rivals from the top 10 of the WTA, will have this Saturday the opportunity to add his first big trophy outside the clay of Roland Garros.
Her rival will be the Tunisian Jabeur, number five in the WTA, who on Thursday left the French Caroline Garcia on the road.
βIt is always hard against her: she is very physical; she has very good hands,β Swiatek warned. “I have to be very careful, but now I’m going to enjoy being in the final.” (D)
